The Senate has appointed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North) as the inaugural Chairman of the Senate Committee on the newly formed South-East Development Commission (SEDC), one of the regional development commissions. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the appointment during a plenary session in Abuja on Tuesday.
Kalu, who previously chaired the Senate Committee on Privatisation, will now lead the SEDC committee.
Additionally, Senator Ken Eze (Ebonyi Central) has been appointed as the vice chairman of the committee. Akpabio also stated that the remaining members of the committee would be disclosed at a later time.

Kalu, who had previously chaired the screening of nominees for the management of both the North-West Development Commission (NWDC) and the SEDC, will now oversee the SEDC’s activities.
His leadership will be pivotal in advancing the commission’s objectives, such as civil restitution, addressing erosion, improving security, and enhancing infrastructure in the region.
In a related development, the Senate confirmed the board members of the SEDC based on the report presented by Senator Kalu.
The 18-member board will be led by Dr. Emeka Nworgu, with Hon. Mark Okoye appointed as the Managing Director and CEO. Other confirmed members include Ugochukwu H. Agballah, Hon. Okey Kzenwa, Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, and others.
Additional appointments include Daniel Akwari, Chief (Mrs.) Joke Adebayo-Chukwuma, Hon. Stanley Ohajuruka (Executive Director, Finance), Chief Sylvester Okonkwo (Executive Director, Corporate Services), Hon. Toby Okechukwu (Executive Director, Projects), Senator Anthony Agbo (Executive Director, Commercial and Industrial Development), and Dr. Clifford Ogbede (Executive Director, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Rural Development).
