German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated on Wednesday that the Gaza Strip “belongs to the Palestinians,” in response to President Donald Trump’s suggestion that the United States should take control of the territory.
She emphasized that the forced displacement of Gaza’s civilian population would be “unacceptable and contrary to international law,” and would lead to further suffering and resentment.

Baerbock affirmed that Gaza, along with the West Bank and East Jerusalem, is part of Palestinian territory, which forms the basis for a future Palestinian state.
She reiterated that a two-state solution remains the “only” path to peace.
Trump had proposed to “take over” Gaza during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, without providing specifics on how he would manage the displacement of over two million Palestinians or control the region.
Baerbock also acknowledged the shocking scale of destruction in Gaza and stressed that Europe is ready to work with the U.S. and regional partners to help rebuild.
However, she emphasized that Hamas, the militant group responsible for triggering the conflict, must no longer have a role in Gaza’s future.
