Two Suspected Killers Of Anambra Lawmaker Escape From Police Custody

Two individuals suspected of killing Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra House of Assembly, have escaped from police custody in the state.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson for Anambra State, revealed this in a statement on Tuesday evening.

Azuka, a member of the state assembly, was kidnapped by gunmen on December 24, 2024. On February 6, a joint security team discovered his decomposing body near the Second Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The police later confirmed the arrest of nine suspects in connection with his murder.

However, Ikenga, a police superintendent, stated that on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, received a report confirming that two of the suspected killers had escaped.

Ikenga explained that the two suspects, who were cooperating with the police, had been taken out for an investigation aimed at apprehending a person involved in receiving stolen vehicles used by the criminal group.

During the operation, the receiver was arrested, and two vehicles believed to have been stolen were recovered. Unfortunately, the two suspects managed to flee the scene.

In response, the police commissioner has deployed “human, operational, and intelligence assets” to capture the fugitives.

Orutugu also ordered immediate disciplinary action against any officers found responsible for the escape.

He reassured the public that efforts are underway to re-arrest the suspects and ensure they face prosecution, with any negligent officers also facing consequences.
