Rivers Electoral Commission Fixes Date For Fresh LG Election

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has scheduled a new Local Government (LG) election for August 9, 2025.

This announcement was made by the Chief Electoral Commissioner, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), during a stakeholders meeting on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

The decision comes after the Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday, which declared the October 5, 2024, LG election in the state invalid.

On Sunday, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara assured the public that his administration would implement the Supreme Court’s ruling after thoroughly reviewing its Certified True Copy (CTC).

In a broadcast on Sunday, Governor Fubara mentioned that he had met with his legal team, who are expected to receive the CTC by Friday, March 7, 2025. He emphasized his government’s commitment to following constitutional principles and adhering to the law.

Additionally, Fubara directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to take immediate control of the 23 local government councils in the state, following the Supreme Court’s decision to annul the October 5, 2023, LG elections.

Civil servants will manage local government affairs until fresh elections are held by the State Electoral Commission.

In a separate ruling on Friday, the Supreme Court also prohibited the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from releasing funds to the Rivers State government until it complies with previous court orders.

Furthermore, the court dismissed Governor Fubara’s appeal challenging the validity of the House of Assembly led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule.

The court ordered that Amaewhule immediately resume his duties with the elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
