Senate Gives Strong Condition To Lift Or Reduce The Tenure Of Natasha’s Suspension

The Senate has imposed a six-month suspension on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan due to her dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

While reading the recommendations from the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct, Senate President Akpabio stated, “That the Senate do suspend Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months for her total violation of the Senate Standing Rules (2023 as amended) by bringing the presiding officer and the entire Nigerian Senate into public disrepute.”

Despite attempts by some senators to reduce the suspension to three months, the Senate upheld the original six-month decision with a majority vote.

However, lawmakers noted that the suspension could be lifted or shortened if Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan submits a written apology.

Akpabio clarified, “For the Senate to consider lifting this suspension or reducing its duration, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan shall submit a written apology to the Senate before her reconsideration by the Nigerian Senate.”

After the suspension was announced, the Kogi Central lawmaker was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-At-Arms. Before leaving, she stated, “This injustice will not be tolerated.”
