Niger Coup Leader Sworn In As President For Five Years

General Abdourahamane Tchiani, who led the 2023 coup in Niger, has been sworn in as the country’s president for a five-year transitional period.

This inauguration, which took place on Wednesday, is based on a new charter that replaces Niger’s constitution.

Tchiani has also been promoted to the highest military rank, army general, and has dissolved all political parties.

During the ceremony in Niamey, he expressed humility upon receiving his new military rank and pledged to uphold the trust placed in him.

The five-year transition to democratic rule, which is “flexible” depending on security, follows recommendations from national discussions.

Niger has faced ongoing jihadist attacks, a reason cited by the junta for the coup.

This military takeover follows similar coups in neighboring Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso.

These four nations have cut ties with France and established alliances with Russia.

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have also withdrawn from the West African regional bloc, Ecowas.

Niger’s relationship with Ecowas deteriorated when the junta initially proposed a three-year transition, which Ecowas deemed a “provocation.”

The Tchiani administration is prosecuting former President Mohamed Bazoum for treason and undermining national security.

Bazoum remains detained, while his son was provisionally released in January.

According to state news agency ANP, Tchiani stated that the new charter aligns with traditional constitutions and includes “unprecedented measures” to protect Niger’s natural resources.
