The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has obtained a court order to keep social media activist Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), in custody while they complete an investigation into alleged cybercrime offences.
VDM was arrested last Friday at a bank in the Wuse area of Abuja by a joint team of EFCC, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Police Force operatives shortly after he left the bank.
His arrest triggered significant public outcry on social media, with the hashtag #FreeVDM trending throughout the weekend as critics accused authorities of using security agencies to suppress opposing views.

Sources familiar with the investigation have confirmed that the EFCC is preparing to file charges against VDM under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act, which grants the commission the authority to investigate and prosecute cybercrimes, especially those related to financial and economic offences.
“The remand order was granted to allow us to complete our investigation and finalize the charges,” a senior EFCC official stated, adding that VDM “would be arraigned once we conclude that process, and the charges are expected to be substantial,” according to a source.
As of Monday morning, VDM remains in EFCC custody.
The EFCC has not yet released an official statement regarding the arrest or the specific charges.
