Bode George, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed strong disapproval over the police occupation of the party’s secretariat in Abuja, which prevented its National Executive Council (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) meetings scheduled for Monday.

Speaking to reporters after he and other PDP National Working Committee members were denied access to the secretariat, George warned the Federal Government against escalating the country into a crisis.

“It’s strikingly annoying. This is our property. Was there any court order to say we will not hold our meeting in our office? What is going on?” George questioned, drawing a parallel to the political unrest in Nigeria’s past. “I was a young man in 1962 when it all started in the South West. We must avoid that madness. What is it? Can’t we sit and talk?1 What is the essence of democracy?”

He further stated, “Nigerians are watching, you came to our office, surrounded by police because we want to have a meeting? You want to turn us to North Korea or turn this country to Russia? We will not allow it, Nigerians will not allow it.”

George insisted that the scheduled meeting would still take place, though he did not reveal the new venue.

Armed policemen had taken over Wadata Plaza, the PDP headquarters, on Monday morning, barring BoT members from entering amid rising tensions over the planned NEC meeting.
