Orji Uzor Kalu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC) and former Governor of Abia State, has revealed that Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje’s resignation as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was primarily due to health reasons.
Ganduje’s sudden resignation last week, citing “urgent and personal matters,” had generated widespread public reaction, with many Nigerians caught off guard. The ruling APC announced on Monday that it had accepted his resignation and was already making plans for his replacement.
In an interview with Channels Television, Kalu stated, “I was just with the national Chairman two weeks ago in his house, and we had a lot to discuss about health, about the party, about every other thing. So health issues are what you can never put your eyes or your ears or your mind to.”

The Abia North Senator further emphasized the close relationship between Ganduje and President Tinubu, asserting, “Ganduje is a very close friend of the President. And you know, if it’s not health issues, he cannot say it’s not health issues.”
He urged Nigerians to believe Ganduje, dismissing speculation that his resignation was politically motivated, possibly linked to Rabiu Kwankwaso joining the party.
Kalu highlighted the demanding nature of the APC National Chairman’s role, questioning, “So can he really be running around from pillar to post, from Sokoto to Rivers, from Kebbi to Calabar, from Yobe to Abia and to Lagos, post to post? It’s quite a difficult job to be done. So honestly, I believe him.”
He concluded by stressing the need for Nigerians to trust their leaders, stating that President Tinubu is courageous enough to demand a resignation if it were for reasons other than health.
Kalu noted Ganduje’s strong support for Tinubu during his governorship, being one of the first to openly back him.
