Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Malami announced his decision on Wednesday evening via a statement released on his Facebook page, revealing that he has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has been adopted as the coalition party by various opposition leaders.
The ADC was publicly unveiled in Abuja on Wednesday by prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasiru El-Rufa’i, and former Senate President David Mark, among others.

Malami’s resignation from the APC came just hours after this unveiling.
In his statement, Malami explained that his decision to leave the APC and align with the ADC was a result of “wide consultations and deep personal reflection.”
He emphasized that his choice was not driven by personal ambition or anger, but rather by “love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing daily,” underscoring that the coalition aims to rescue Nigeria from further decline.
The former minister lamented the severe challenges facing the country, particularly citing the widespread insecurity, including banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism, especially prevalent in the North.
He alleged that the government prioritizes political considerations over the safety and well-being of its citizens.
Malami also decried the nation’s struggling economy and poor economic policies, which have led to significant inflation in the prices of food and essential goods.
He stated that “The poor can no longer feed their families. Jobs are disappearing. Young people are hopeless.”
Furthermore, he accused the current administration of being consumed by propaganda and political distractions instead of focusing on real solutions.
Malami criticized that “Appointments, projects, and policies are now guided by political loyalty and not national interest,” asserting, “I cannot remain part of a system that watches in silence as Nigerians suffer and die.”
