Akpabio Sends Warning To Nigerians Concerning Coalition

During the House of Representatives Open Week in Abuja, Senate President Godswill Akpabio cautioned Nigerians against placing their hopes in political coalitions, stating that such arrangements are unrealistic within the country’s electoral system.

He emphasized that only political parties, not individuals or coalitions, are legally permitted to contest elections, calling the idea of a person belonging to two parties simultaneously deceptive and impractical.

Akpabio’s comments followed a meeting on Wednesday, July 2, in Abuja, where an opposition coalition adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its official platform for the 2027 elections.

This coalition named former Senate President David Mark as interim national chairman and ex-Osun governor Rauf Aregbesola as secretary.

The high-profile gathering saw the attendance of numerous prominent politicians, including Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, and others.

The Senate President also addressed public expectations of lawmakers, clarifying that legislators’ primary role is to make laws, not to undertake infrastructure development projects.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, provided an update on the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

He announced that 10% of seats in both the Senate and the House would be reserved for women, and an additional 5% would be allocated to persons with disabilities.
