Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has dismissed recent speculation regarding his potential defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He unequivocally stated that he remains a dedicated member of the PDP and has no intentions of joining either the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—the latter recently adopted by an opposition coalition as a possible platform for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ program on Wednesday, Governor Lawal characterized the reports as “mere speculation.”

He affirmed, “First of all, I’m glad that you said a rumour that APC, ADC and whatever political parties are calling on me to join their party. And I made it clear that I am a PDP card-carrying member and I am still in the PDP, I have no intention of going anywhere. So, what you heard is a rumour but I am still in the PDP and have no intention of going anywhere for now.”
The governor also rejected suggestions that he might be seeking political refuge with the ruling APC due to pressure from opposition elements in Zamfara State.
He highlighted that these same forces, including former governors Sani Yerima and Bello Matawalle, were present during the 2023 governorship race but failed to prevent his victory. “All the forces in the opposition were there in 2023, and I still won,” Lawal declared, expressing confidence in defeating them again should they contest in 2027.
While acknowledging that the PDP is currently facing internal challenges, Governor Lawal expressed optimism that the party would soon resolve these issues.
Regarding his relationship with President Bola Tinubu, Lawal noted that despite a cordial rapport, they remain in different political camps.
When asked about supporting the President’s re-election bid, Lawal responded, “Let’s see how events will unfold, there is still time to 2027, we still have two years down the line. So, I don’t think politics should be the main issue right now, I think we should focus on governance.”
