Senate President Godswill Akpabio has formally transferred the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State to Governor Umo Eno.
The handover took place on Friday at the Government House in Uyo.
“I want to formally hand over the APC structure in Akwa Ibom to the new leader of the party in the state,” Akpabio announced at the ceremony, symbolically presenting a broom, which he said “will sweep away poverty, underdevelopment, and disunity from Akwa Ibom.”

His remarks were met with applause from party members gathered in the banquet hall.
Governor Eno officially joined the ruling APC last month, marking an end to the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) 26-year rule in Akwa Ibom.
Eno was elected governor on the PDP platform.
At the reception ceremony welcoming him into the APC, the governor expressed no fear in joining the party, asserting that the APC platform would facilitate the realization of the Ibom Deep Seaport project.
This project, which has been in development for over two decades since the administration of then-Governor Victor Attah, is a key focus for the state.
“We are not afraid of joining the APC, for we know that with the APC we would realise our Ibom Deep Seaport. That is our plea. For over 30 years, Akwa Ibom has struggled to have a seaport, but today we are reassured that the federal government will help us to realise the seaport,” Governor Eno stated.
During the event, Governor Eno thanked the people of Akwa Ibom for their support and pledged to remain a governor for all, regardless of his political affiliation.
Until last month, Akpabio, who represents Akwa Ibom North-West in the Senate, served as the state’s APC leader.
Former National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Ganduje (who recently resigned from the position), had previously announced Governor Eno as the new state party leader at the reception, declaring Senate President Akpabio a national leader of the party.
The formal handover ceremony on Friday was attended by various party leaders.
