“We Are In Bondage” – Obasanjo Declares, Reveals Who Nigeria Needs As Leader

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has asserted that Nigeria is currently in “bondage,” struggling under the weight of insecurity, economic hardship, and leadership divided by sectional interests.

He emphasized the urgent need for a truly national leader to guide the country toward a new path.

Speaking from his Abeokuta residence in Ogun State on Friday during a visit by the Southern leadership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Obasanjo lamented, “We are in bondage. Let us keep watching the situation, but more importantly, let us pray that God delivers us.”

He insisted that only a leader capable of transcending ethnic and sectional interests can rescue the nation.

Obasanjo reiterated his non-alignment with any political party, declaring, “I belong to no party. Nigeria is my political party. I only care about the country’s progress.”

He urged citizens to remain vigilant and engaged, warning that apathy could leave the nation susceptible to unworthy leadership.

Decrying the persistent trend of ethnicized leadership, Obasanjo stated, “We’ve had Fulani Nigerian presidents, Hausa Nigerian presidents, Yoruba Nigerian presidents… but we’ve yet to have a true Nigerian president, one for all, not just their tribe. Until we do, our problems will remain.”

He called for a renewed focus on addressing the pervasive insecurity, revitalizing the economy, and eradicating tribalism.

Obasanjo expressed disappointment in the current political landscape, remarking, “We have few genuine nationalists among politicians today. Most are in it for themselves. Nigeria has disappointed not only Africa but the entire world.”
