The All Progressives Congress (APC) is now just three seats shy of achieving a two-thirds majority in the Nigerian Senate, a critical constitutional threshold required for actions such as amending the constitution, overriding presidential vetoes, and initiating impeachment proceedings.
This significant shift occurred following the formal defection of four senators from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling APC on Wednesday.
The defecting lawmakers cited “irreconcilable divisions” within the PDP as their reason for leaving.

The senators who officially joined the APC are:
- Sampson Ekong – representing Akwa Ibom South
- Aniekan Bassey – representing Akwa Ibom North-East
- Francis Fadahunsi – representing Osun East
- Fadeyi Olubiyi – representing Osun Central
The defections were announced during a plenary session, witnessed by high-profile APC officials including the party’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, and former Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige.
With these latest additions, the APC now commands 70 out of the 109 seats in the Senate.
This places the party in a much stronger position to advance its legislative agenda with less reliance on bipartisan support, needing only three more seats to reach the 73 required for a two-thirds majority.
Currently, 107 out of 109 Senate seats are occupied, with two seats remaining vacant (Anambra South and Edo Central).
The updated party breakdown in the Senate is as follows:
- APC – 70 seats
- PDP – 28 seats
- Labour Party (LP) – 5 seats
- Social Democratic Party (SDP) – 2 seats
- New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) – 1 seat
- All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – 1 seat
