Senate Speaks On Alleged Rift Between Akpabio And Bamidele

The Senate has categorically denied recent media reports of a supposed clash between its President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.

The claims, which suggested a verbal exchange during an executive session over the proposed annual recess, have been dismissed as baseless and a misrepresentation of standard parliamentary proceedings.

This isn’t the first time the Upper Legislative Chamber has debunked reports of alleged verbal exchanges between the two leaders during executive sessions.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, who serves as the Senate Spokesperson and chairs the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, affirmed that there was no altercation.

Instead, he described what transpired as “normal, structured engagement among colleagues, guided by mutual respect and shared responsibility to the Nigerian people.”

Adaramodu emphasized that “robust debate is at the heart of parliamentary engagement and should not be misread as conflict.”

The Senate highlighted that debates, questions, and differing views are fundamental to legislative work and are regularly exercised by lawmakers, regardless of their political affiliation.

“Like parliaments around the world, our Chamber thrives on open discussions, particularly when motions or bills that affect national policy are brought forward,” Adaramodu added, clarifying that “Such engagement is a strength—not a sign of division.”

Dismissing any notion of discord within the chamber’s leadership, Adaramodu asserted that the Senate remains united, focused, and committed to its legislative mandate.

“There is no crack in our ranks. Leadership remains firm, collaborative, and committed to the progress of our nation,” he concluded.

The Senate’s response directly refutes the circulating media reports that alleged a heated exchange between Akpabio and Bamidele regarding the timing of their annual recess.
