The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has distanced itself from a viral social media statement that claimed the group warned former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and cautioned the North against supporting him.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization described the reports as “false, misleading, and the handiwork of political mischief-makers.”
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo therefore wishes to use this opportunity to state in categorical and unambiguous terms that such a misleading and mischief-driven statement did not emanate from the dignified apex Igbo body,” the statement read.

Chukwu affirmed that the current leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, under President-General Senator John Azuta Mbata, Deputy President-General Prince Okey Nwadinobi, and Secretary-General Emeka Sibeudu, would “never issue such ignominious remarks.”
Reiterating the organization’s commitment to national development and Igbo unity, Chukwu added, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo is primarily committed to the general wellbeing of the Igbo nation and national development by extension through justice, fairness and equity.It is nevertheless non-partisan and has not in any way taken any stand on the 2027 presidential election or adopted any presidential candidate.”
He further urged the public and media outlets to disregard statements from individuals “misusing the name of Ohanaeze for political gain.”
