Five Nigerian governors—Babagana Zulum of Borno, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Uba Sani of Kaduna, Hope Uzodinma of Imo, and Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa—have been nominated for the 2025 African Governors Excellence Award.
The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held in Paris on August 19.
According to Dr. Idahosa Osamahze, the Vice Chairman of the Selection Committee, the initiative aims to promote public service excellence, encourage innovation in governance, and foster leadership best practices for Africa’s socio-economic development.
He stated that the event will celebrate “visionary leadership, exceptional governance, and impactful development initiatives” in recognition of the governors’ commitment to driving sustainable transformation in their regions.

The awards are designed to highlight transformative projects in areas like healthcare, infrastructure, education, economic empowerment, and inclusive governance.
Other nominees for the award include governors from Egypt and Kenya.
From Egypt, the nominees are Gov. Abdel Amara, Gov. Amr Hanafi, Gov. Gamal Nour El-Din, and Gov. Khaled Fouda. From Kenya, the nominees are Gov. Hillary Barchok, Gov. George Natembeya, Gov. Mohamed Adan Khalif, and Gov. Jeremiah Lomorukai.
Osamahze praised the nominees, stating, “These governors exemplify what leadership with vision, integrity, and purpose can achieve. Their work is changing lives, fostering prosperity, and inspiring a new generation of public servants across Africa.”
The Paris ceremony is expected to be attended by high-profile dignitaries, diplomats, and stakeholders from Africa and Europe.
The event will also feature keynote addresses from global policy leaders, panel discussions on sub-national governance innovation, and networking sessions to promote intergovernmental collaboration.
