The federal government has issued a stern warning to Nigerian citizens about the dangers of misusing their U.S. visas, following serious concerns from the United States regarding a rise in visa violations.
This official advisory, signed by Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) spokesperson ACI A.S. Akinlabi and released on August 1, 2025, cautions all visa holders to strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications.
It emphasizes that U.S. authorities continue to monitor visa holders even after their arrival, and that entering the country does not end immigration scrutiny.

According to the advisory, any breach of U.S. immigration laws, such as overstaying, working illegally, or misrepresenting the purpose of travel, could result in immediate deportation, visa revocation, and a permanent ban from future travel to the U.S.
The government also specifically addressed Nigerian students, stressing the importance of maintaining active academic status.
It warned that withdrawing from studies, prolonged absences, or unauthorized program changes could lead to visa cancellation and jeopardize future international education opportunities.
Additionally, the advisory highlighted a growing concern from U.S. consular officers regarding birth tourism.
Nigerians applying for tourist visas may face rejection if there is a suspicion that their primary intention is to give birth in the U.S. to secure citizenship for their child.
The NIS stated that it is working closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria avoids broader visa restrictions.
However, it underscored that this cooperation depends heavily on the responsible conduct of individual Nigerian travelers.
The warning is part of a broader effort to protect the reputation of the Nigerian passport and prevent legitimate travelers from being penalized due to the actions of a few who violate immigration laws.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) wishes to inform the general public of concerns raised by the United States Government regarding the misuse of U.S. visas by Nigerians. All visa holders are advised to strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications.”
“Breach of visa conditions, including overstaying, may attract severe penalties, including removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel. The U.S. is committed to maintaining secure and transparent visa processes.” The statement concluded.
