Ghanaian President John Mahama Reacts To “Nigerians Must Go” Protest

Ghanaian President John Mahama has stated there is no place for xenophobia in Ghana, assuring the Nigerian government of his commitment to the safety of Nigerians and their businesses in the country.

Mahama’s assurance came during a meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, at the Presidential Palace in Accra.

According to a statement from Magnus Eze, a media assistant in the minister’s office, Mahama urged President Bola Tinubu not to be concerned about recent protests against Nigerians in Ghana, highlighting the shared history between the two nations.

Mahama explained that recent tensions were caused by the recirculation of an old video made by a Nigerian in Ghana over 10 years ago, but he noted that the situation was quickly brought under control.

He reaffirmed his commitment to the ECOWAS Protocols, particularly those concerning the free movement of people and goods.

Earlier, Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu stated that her delegation’s mission was to address the tension and convey the Nigerian government’s concern for the safety of its nationals, their properties, and businesses in Ghana.

She also mentioned the visit was a step toward establishing a permanent Nigeria-Ghana Joint Commission to help address youth-related issues and the migration of unemployed people.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu said she would meet with Nigerians residing in Ghana to urge them to respect and adhere to Ghanaian laws.

On her X handle, she described the meeting as “engaging,” noting that President Mahama is committed to “promoting peaceful coexistence” and ensuring that both citizens and non-citizens, along with their properties and assets, are safe.
