Shehu Sani Reveals Those Responsible For Poverty, Insecurity, And Decaying Infrastructure In The North

Former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central, has blamed failed leadership by past northern leaders for the pervasive poverty, insecurity, and decaying infrastructure in the region.

Speaking at his Kaduna residence on Tuesday while receiving members of the Tijjaniyya Grassroots Mobilisation and Empowerment Initiative of Nigeria (TIGMEIN), Sani accused past northern leaders of squandering opportunities, looting resources, and neglecting the people who trusted them with power.

“We had Buhari in power for eight years, yet the North remained impoverished,” he said.

“Industries like KTL, UNTL, Nortex, Arewa Textiles, and others were abandoned. Our leaders chased personal gains, not the people’s progress.”

Sani called it “deceptive and unjust” to blame the region’s problems on President Bola Tinubu, who has been in office for only two years.

He argued that the North’s issues, such as poor roads, failing healthcare, and insecurity, did not begin in the last 24 months, but are the result of decades of mismanagement.

The former lawmaker also listed abandoned projects, including the Kaduna-Abuja road, the Ajaokuta Steel Company, and the Mambilla Power Project, as evidence of a leadership that betrayed the North.

He warned against the return of such leaders, stating, “If they return to power, nothing will change.”

Sani praised TIGMEIN’s grassroots empowerment efforts, particularly their focus on equipping women and youths with skills, describing it as a meaningful way to combat poverty and promote peace.
