UNIZIK Bans ‘Sign Off’ Ceremony For Graduating Students

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, has imposed an indefinite ban on the popular ‘signing off’ tradition observed by its final-year students after their final examinations.

The ban, which was announced in a statement by the university’s Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, on Thursday, takes “immediate effect.”

Okeke stated that the ban was necessary due to repeated cases of chaos, violence, and the disruption of normal university activities linked to the event.

The management expressed concern that unauthorized individuals “frequently infiltrate the campus during the celebrations, creating security risks for both students and staff.”

The university emphasized that these ‘signing off’ practices have grown into “unruly gatherings, sometimes resulting in disorderly conduct, threats to safety and property damage.”

The university also warned that any student found engaging in the act would face “severe disciplinary actions, including possible rustication.”

Outsiders who enter the campus to participate in the banned activity were also warned that they risk “arrest and prosecution for breach of peace.”

The statement concluded that the university is now aligned with “other universities across Nigeria in cracking down on unruly final-year ‘sign out’ celebrations, placing safety and order above tradition.”
