On Friday, August 29, 2025, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde will begin a month-long leave.
This was announced in a notification letter that was read at the House of Assembly’s plenary session on Tuesday.
The letter, read by Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, was in accordance with “Section 190(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” which requires the governor to provide a written notice to the House before taking leave.
In the letter, Makinde formally transferred his “responsibilities of the office” to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, who will serve as “Acting Governor” during this time.

The letter also stated, “I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as Acting Governor. I shall resume duty upon my return from vacation on Monday, 29th September 2025.”
The Speaker confirmed that the House “acknowledged the letter and assured the House’s support for a smooth transition of duties in the governor’s absence.”
He also “reaffirmed that the House remains committed to constitutional order and the continuity of governance in the state.”
Barr. Bayo Lawal is expected to take over the full responsibilities of the office from August 29 until Governor Makinde’s return on September 29.
The House will resume its own plenary session on September 16, 2025.
