The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has declared his support for Christopher Maikalangu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairmanship seat in the February 2026 council polls.
Maikalangu, the current AMAC chairman, clinched the APC ticket on June 26, 2025, polling 51 votes.
The declaration of support comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) authorized the commencement of campaigns on September 24, 2025, which will end at midnight on February 19, 2026.

Wike made the announcement on Monday during the flag-off of road projects linking Tunga Madaki and eight other communities to the airport.
He noted that Maikalangu had previously “pressed on him” to remind the President to compensate the residents for the second runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
The Minister urged the people to support the candidate, with the goal of ensuring Maikalangu would be part of the project commissioning in June 2026.
Wike stated, “Now that INEC has said area councils can go and campaign, now that INEC has said they can go and campaign officially, you all know where we’re heading to.”
He then made a direct appeal based on development, saying: “Now let me say, remember, you have had area council chairman before, no be so? Did anybody remember Tunga Madaki settlement?”

He concluded the political appeal by saying, “So, my dear people of Tunga Madaki, I have handed over Mailakangu to you. So that, when the election will be held in February, by June, Mr. President will be here to inaugurate this road, and then we will all dance, and dance, and then Mr. Maikalangu will come and do the needful after the election in February 2026,” he stated.
Wike confirmed that President Bola Tinubu had directed full compensation be paid to the communities ahead of the road construction.
He explained that the communities had requested their settlements be linked with roads, a request the Tinubu administration granted.
The Minister stated, “One of the things that the communities asked for, was that they have to be connected, they have to be linked up with roads. It is quite unfair that they are releasing their land for a second runway, but yet they have no access to even go to the airport. It does not make sense.”
He affirmed that he took the matter to the President, and “Mr. President said, whatever the settlement ask for, give it to them. Today, the 29th of September 2025, we are here to the glory of God and to fulfill the promise made by Mr. President to the people of Tunga Madaki settlement.”
Wike concluded by congratulating the communities, saying, “It shows you the government of Mr. President is a listening government. It’s a government that cares for the people. It’s a government that made promise and fulfilled the promise made.”
