At a meeting held on Wednesday, 12 October, the Chairman of GTI Human Rights Activists Nationwide, Mr. Bibi Oduku, alongside other legal practitioners, human rights activists, journalists, and stakeholders, resolved to stand by Lieutenant Yerima at all times. It was noted that the officer was acting in the lawful discharge of his duties and did not, at any point, use insulting language toward the Minister.

The group commends the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mr. Mohammad Abubakar, for his commitment to uphold the officer’s rights as expressed in his speech.

GTI Human Rights Activists Nationwide hereby calls on the Honourable Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, to handle this matter with utmost discretion and avoid actions that may attract undue public attention. We further urge the Minister to engage the Former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, in a direct dialogue to resolve the issue amicably, rather than allowing it to escalate in the public domain.

We advise members of the public and users of social media to refrain from posting inflammatory content or engaging in actions that could exacerbate tensions. Peaceful resolution and adherence to due process remain the preferred approach.

Signed:

Mr. Bibi Oduku
Chairman, GTI Human Rights Activists Nationwide
