FG Appoints Lawal As Substantive Medical Director Of NOHIL

The Federal Government has appointed Dr Wakeel Lawal as the substantive Medical Director of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.

Wakeel’s appointment, according to a statement on Tuesday by the hospital’s Assistant Director, Information and Public Relations, Ayo Adenike, takes effect from Monday, 10th November 2025.

Wakeel has been serving in an acting capacity after the death of Dr Mustapha Alimi.

Alimi was the medical director of the hospital until his death in March 2025.

Alimi assumed office as NOHIL MD eight years ago and died after a brief illness. He was due to retire in July 2025.

The newly appointed MD is a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, where he obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB).

The statement said: “He holds two Master’s degrees — one in Orthopaedics from the University of Chester, United Kingdom, and another in Healthcare Management from the University of Zambia.”

Furthermore: “He has also received certifications in Arthroplasty from the University of Assiut, Egypt, and Ganga Medical Centre and Hospitals, India, among others.”

The statement concluded: “Dr Lawal has served on various committees within the hospital and was the Acting Medical Director until his confirmation as the substantive Medical Director.”
