In a major development on Wednesday evening, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) sealed off a residence linked to the former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN.
Sources have described the move as a “major escalation in an ongoing high-profile corruption investigation.”
According to authoritative sources, several enforcement vehicles and armed operatives were seen at the property associated with Malami.
It was reported that Nana Hadiza Buhari—Malami’s third wife and the daughter of former President Muhammadu Buhari—was “present at the time of the operation.”
This action follows Malami’s continued detention as the anti-graft agency carries out a “wide-ranging probe bordering on alleged corruption, money laundering, terrorism financing and controversies surrounding the management of recovered Abacha loot.”
Furthermore, investigators are reportedly “examining multiple bank accounts and suspicious financial transactions allegedly linked to his tenure in office” between 2015 and 2023.
Although the former minister was previously granted administrative bail, EFCC officials noted that the “bail was effectively revoked after he allegedly failed to meet key conditions attached to it.”
The commission has made it clear that “he remains in lawful custody pending further compliance and extended interrogation.”
The decision to send operatives to the residence is being seen as a “significant intensification of the investigation,” a move that has “reignited debate over the scope, independence and methods of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies.”
As of now, neither Malami’s lawyers nor the Buhari family have released an official statement.
Additionally, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale has “declined to comment on operational details, citing the sensitivity of ongoing investigations.”
