Bwala Point Fingers As He Reacts To Ongoing Protests

Daniel Bwala, a lawyer and public affairs analyst, has responded to the nationwide protests against hunger and the rising cost of living.

The protests, organized by some Nigerians to urge President Bola Tinubu’s government to address their concerns, were initially intended to be peaceful. However, violence has erupted in several states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In Abuja, the protest began peacefully at the designated venue, but the situation spiraled out of control as mobs gathered in different parts of the city. Near Asokoro, suspected thugs took over the Zuba-Kuba expressway, blocking human and vehicular traffic. Security forces struggled to contain the unrest, and after initially dispersing the crowds, the protesters returned to the roads. During the chaos, at least one youth who had barricaded the road was shot and killed.

In Niger State, security operatives trying to restore order shot and killed at least six people. In Katsina, frustrated youths marched to the residence of former President Muhammadu Buhari but were unable to gain access. They set bonfires and protested the worsening conditions in the country, also marching to the Emir’s palace.

In Jigawa, angry youths set fire to the head office of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and attacked the homes of several politicians. They also looted government warehouses and destroyed property. Reports indicate that at least two people were killed in the violence.

There were additional reports of killings in Kano.

Weighing in on the unrest, Bwala tweeted on Thursday evening that he expected all APC governors to take steps to calm the protesters in their respective states. He also suggested that ministers and cabinet members of the Tinubu administration should have engaged with the protesters in their regions.

He wrote: “I was actually expecting all the APC governors who share the vision of Mr President for the reform to engage with the protesters in their respective states and calm them down.

“I also expected all the ministers and cabinet members of the @officialABAT administration to go to their respective states and engage in dialogue and address the protesters who are peaceful

“I also expected that all appointees of Mr president to flood the airwaves TV, Radio, zoom, and social media engaging  with the protesters and or millions of Nigerians who are not protesting but share views one way or the other

“Adversity defines loyalty, not longevity or proximity. But alas, majority took cover and are silent. This is disingenuous and unfair to the man who appointed you. Sad.”
