The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened a formal probe into allegations of misconduct involving players and officials during the AFCON 2025 quarter-final matches.
The investigation covers the high-stakes games between Cameroon and Morocco, as well as Algeria and Nigeria.
According to a statement released on Monday, January 12, 2026, on CAF’s official website, the governing body is reviewing match reports and video evidence of “potentially unacceptable behaviour.”
These matters have been referred to the Disciplinary Board.

The statement clarified:“CAF has referred the matters to the Disciplinary Board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons are found guilty of any wrongdoing. CAF is also reviewing footage of an incident involving members of the media who allegedly misbehaved in the mixed zone area.”
The quarter-final clash in Marrakech saw Nigeria advance to the semi-finals with a 2-0 win over Algeria, behind goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams. However, the match concluded in turmoil as Algerian players confronted officials on the pitch. Security was forced to intervene during scuffles and a attempted pitch invasion by fans.
Following the match, the Algerian Football Federation filed a formal protest with CAF. They highlighted what they viewed as questionable officiating by Senegalese referee Issa Sy, specifically pointing to a denied penalty for a handball in the Nigerian penalty area.
Similarly, Morocco’s 2-0 win over Cameroon was marked by officiating controversies.
The Cameroonian side was left frustrated after two penalty appeals involving Moroccan defender Adam Masina were dismissed.
In response, Morocco’s coach, Walid Regragui, rejected claims of any home-team advantage.
CAF has reiterated its stance on maintaining professionalism throughout the tournament, stating:“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers. Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events.”
