The move to impeach Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, has faced a fresh hurdle as two additional members of the State House of Assembly have pulled out of the proceedings.
Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I) and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II) announced their withdrawal just 48 hours after two of their colleagues made a similar move.
While the legislators acknowledged that the Governor and his deputy may have committed constitutional infractions, they noted that their shift in position was influenced by the “interventions by respected leaders and stakeholders who appealed for restraint in the interest of peace and stability in the State.”

With this latest development, the number of lawmakers who have distanced themselves from the original 26-member coalition seeking to remove the Governor has risen to four. The defecting members are now calling for a “peaceful resolution of the political crisis in the state.”
The withdrawal follows a similar announcement by Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency) and Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency). During a press briefing in Port Harcourt, they cautioned their colleagues that:“prolonged tension could further destabilise governance in the state.”
They further urged the Assembly to “explore alternative mechanisms to resolve the political impasse,” rather than proceeding with a confrontation.
The Rivers State House of Assembly is scheduled to resume plenary on January 15, 2026.
All eyes are now on the House leadership to see how they will manage the “deepening divisions” within the legislative body.
