CAF Reacts Strongly To AFCON Final Between Morocco And Senegal, Makes Vow

The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has officially denounced the conduct of various players and officials during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal.

In a formal statement released on Monday, the governing body expressed its disapproval, stating: “The Confédération Africaine de Football condemns the unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat last night.”

CAF emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward “any form of inappropriate conduct,” specifically targeting actions aimed at tournament organizers and match officials.

The final was plunged into “scenes of chaos” at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium when the Senegalese squad staged a temporary walk-off to protest a controversial late penalty.

During the standoff, agitated supporters threw objects and attempted to breach the pitch.

Although captain Sadio Mane eventually “pleaded with his teammates to return to the field,” the delay lasted until the 24th minute of stoppage time.

Brahim Diaz subsequently saw his penalty attempt saved by Edouard Mendy, sending the scoreless match into extra time, where Pape Gueye eventually secured the title for Senegal.

CAF has confirmed it is currently “reviewing all footage” and intends to “refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty.”

The incident has sparked global criticism.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino labeled the events “ugly,” reiterating that “violence cannot be tolerated in our sport.” Meanwhile, Morocco’s head coach, Walid Regragui, described the disruptions as “shameful,” remarking that such actions did not “honour Africa.”

This investigation follows a tournament already fraught with tension, including prior Senegalese complaints regarding logistics and allegations of “biased officiating” during Morocco’s earlier semi-final clash with Nigeria.
