The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that a special investigation linked several military officers to a conspiracy to topple the government of President Bola Tinubu.
The admission follows reports from October 2025, when 16 officers—ranging in rank from “Captain to Brigadier-General” were detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) for what was initially termed as “acts of indiscipline and breach of service regulations.”
On Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, revealed that the probe has concluded and the final report has been submitted to the “appropriate superior authority.”

The findings explicitly “identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government,” an act the military high command described as “inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN.”
Major-General Uba stated that the military is moving forward with judicial action: “Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.”
He emphasized that these steps ensure “accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process.”
The military spokesperson reaffirmed the loyalty of the institution, noting that the Armed Forces remain “resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority.”
He further clarified that the ongoing measures are “purely disciplinary and part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks.”
