The Kano State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, citing allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and a breach of public trust.
The Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, introduced the formal notice on the Assembly floor, stating that the move adheres to Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The accusations center largely on Abdussalam’s actions during his time as the Commissioner for Local Government (2023–2024) and his current role.
According to Dala, these allegations involve the systematic diversion of funds intended for the state’s 44 local government areas (LGAs).

Specifically, the Majority Leader detailed a series of alleged financial improprieties:

Monthly Kickbacks: Between June 2023 and January 2024, the Deputy Governor reportedly received N1.5 million monthly from each of the 44 LGAs, a scheme that allegedly totaled N462 million.

Special Assignment Fees: From February to July 2024, it is alleged he received N3.255 million monthly from each council under the pretext of “special assignments,” amounting to approximately N726 million.

Procurement Violations: The notice further alleges that Abdussalam influenced the 44 LGAs to pay N10 million each—totaling N440 million—to NovoMed Pharmaceuticals Limited, a transaction said to violate state procurement and fiscal laws.
Regarding these actions, Dala remarked: “The misuse of official capacity to confer undue advantage constitutes abuse of power and is contrary to the obligations of public office,”
The impeachment notice was signed by 38 lawmakers, surpassing the legal threshold required to begin the process.
Dala emphasized that the combined weight of these allegations constitutes “gross misconduct” as defined by the constitution, which covers serious wrongdoings or constitutional violations by a public official.
While presenting the resolution, Dala stated: “Based on the foregoing allegations, we hereby resolve that His Excellency, Aminu Abdussalam, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, be impeached and removed from office in accordance with the provisions of Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,”
The Speaker of the Assembly has acknowledged the document and will now formally serve the notice to the Deputy Governor.
Following this, if the House maintains the required majority support, the state’s Chief Judge will be asked to form an investigative panel.
As of this report, Deputy Governor Abdussalam has not yet issued a public response to the claims.
