The Federal Government has formally ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved in the alleged mass sexual assaults during a local festival in the Ozoro community of Delta State.
The directive was issued on Friday in Abuja by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, through a statement from the ministry’s spokesperson, Ahmed Danbazau.
The move follows the viral spread of disturbing videos showing women being attacked during the Alue-Do-Festival, also known as the “Festival of Fertility,” in Isoko North Local Government Area.
Minister Sulaiman-Ibrahim expressed deep concern over the reports, making it clear that traditional customs are no excuse for crime.

She stated: “No cultural or traditional practice can justify or excuse sexual violence in any form. Sexual assault is a serious criminal offence, and all allegations must be thoroughly investigated, with perpetrators held fully accountable under the law.”
While commending the Delta State Police for their initial response, the Minister demanded “a transparent, thorough, and accelerated investigation to ensure that all persons implicated are identified and brought to justice without delay.”
She described the attacks as “disturbing, unacceptable, and contrary to human dignity,” pointing out that the Constitution and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act) provide clear legal protections against such acts.
According to the Minister, the government remains committed to prioritizing the “safety, dignity, and protection of women and girls.”
To support those affected, the federal ministry is partnering with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to provide victims with “psychosocial care, medical attention, and legal assistance.”
The statement concluded by noting that the government will intensify efforts to engage traditional leaders to address “harmful norms” and prevent these incidents from happening again, while urging the public to cooperate fully with law enforcement to ensure justice is served.
