The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has officially resigned from his position.
The news was confirmed on Monday, March 30, 2026, by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
Tuggar’s decision follows a specific directive from President Bola Tinubu, which requires all political appointees planning to contest elective positions in the 2027 elections to step down from their posts on or before March 31.
The President based this requirement on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the official timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries.

The resignation comes amid intense speculation that Tuggar intends to run for the Bauchi State governorship in 2027 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A seasoned diplomat and policymaker, he was appointed to the cabinet by President Tinubu in August 2023.
Born on March 12, 1967, Tuggar has a distinguished background in diplomacy, energy, and strategic consulting.
He is well-regarded for his efforts in advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy and global standing.
His previous political experience includes representing the Gamawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011, and he has also vied for the Bauchi governorship in two previous election cycles.
Before his ministerial role, Tuggar served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2023, where he was instrumental in improving bilateral trade and strengthening Nigeria’s interests in Europe.
During his time as Minister of Foreign Affairs, he remained a central figure in the administration’s diplomatic outreach.
