Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has officially distanced himself from the controversy surrounding a group of women who displayed red underwear during a recent political rally.
While social media was flooded with images of the spectacle, with some interpreting it as a state-sponsored empowerment initiative, the Governor maintains the act was carried out without his authorization or prior knowledge.
The incident occurred during a rally organized in honor of the First Lady, Remi Tinubu. Despite the Governor’s denial, observers pointed out that he was seen during the event introducing Teema Cool, the lead campaigner of the group, to the First Lady.
Reports indicate that the display was not an empowerment program but rather a targeted jab at the Governor’s former political mentor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
During the demonstration, the women were heard chanting “Dankamfen Tsula,” a phrase recognized locally as a mocking reference to Kwankwaso.

Speaking at a special prayer session at the Government House, Governor Yusuf described the display as a violation of local cultural and religious values.
He explained that he only learned of the event through second-hand reports after distancing himself from social platforms.
“You have heard what happened. We are here minding our business when someone reported to me that a group of young ladies had displayed something… The governor was unaware. I quit social media because of something like this. I would rather receive such information from someone,” the Governor stated.
He further emphasized the need for a public rebuke of the behavior:“But we must condemn it because it is against our culture and also against the teachings of Islam.”
Governor Yusuf confirmed that he took immediate action once the full details of the rally came to light.
“I got the story of what happened yesterday. And I immediately summoned the young women,” he said.
Following the summons, the campaigners reportedly expressed regret for their actions.
In a visible show of remorse, the women were seen participating in a religious session, reciting the Holy Qur’an and offering prayers to seek forgiveness for what was described as a “sinful” display.
