President Bola Tinubu has officially thrown his weight behind Obafemi Hamzat, the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate, for the 2027 Lagos State governorship race.

The high-profile endorsement took place on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, following a strategic meeting with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos APC.
The delegation was led by Prince Tajudeen Olusi and the current Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Confirming the development on social media, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga shared images from the session and noted, “President Tinubu formally endorses the Lagos APC consensus governorship candidate Obafemi Hamzat at a meeting with members of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council, led by Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who has long worked alongside Hamzat as his deputy, hailed the decision and described his partner as a dependable ally.
He remarked that the President’s backing “is a bold statement of trust, confidence, and assurance by our leader that he is truly the best man for the job.”
Expressing optimism for the future of the state, Sanwo-Olu added, “I have no doubt that the vision for a greater Lagos we started together will have the leadership it needs to continue. There is still much to be done, but the path ahead for Lagos is clear.”
This move follows a major decision on Tuesday by the GAC—the most influential decision-making organ within the Lagos APC—to support Hamzat’s quest for the governorship.
With the President’s formal approval now secured, Hamzat’s momentum continues to build ahead of next year’s electoral cycle.
