Senators Victor Umeh of Anambra and Enyinnaya Abaribe of Abia officially left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday, joining different parties due to leadership turmoil and internal friction.
During the plenary session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio shared their intentions through separate formal letters.
Senator Umeh, representing Anambra Central, moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
In his correspondence, he explained that the choice was made following thorough discussions with stakeholders, family, and supporters.

He stated, “I have taken this decision after wide consultations with my family, my constituents, and supporters in view of the lingering divisions in the leadership and unending litigations in the African Democratic Congress.”
He expressed a continued dedication to the country, noting, “I remain committed to making my contributions towards the development of our dear nation, but this time through the NDC. Please, accept the assurances of my highest regards.”
Senator Abaribe, representing Abia South, transitioned to the Labour Party (LP), stating that his resignation from the ADC “takes immediate effect.”
He explained his move by saying, “My decision to resign my membership of the African Democratic Congress is effective immediately. Accordingly, I have joined the Labour Party.”

Abaribe attributed the shift to the party’s worsening internal situation, stating, “My decision is anchored on the now well-known leadership crisis within the ADC, occasioned by multiple legal issues besetting the party.”
Reacting to the announcements, Senate President Akpabio joked about the frequent party changes among legislators.
He remarked, ”Clerk, note that he has moved and now he has moved from ADC to Labour Party. If he brings another letter, I won’t announce it again,” which caused laughter throughout the chamber.
