Prominent Lagos politician, Funso Doherty, has officially accepted the nomination of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as its candidate for the Lagos State governorship election scheduled for 2027.

In an acceptance letter shared on his official X account on Friday, Doherty emphasized his humility, gratitude to the party leadership, and a steadfast vision for inclusive governance.

Attached images to his post featured him holding his NDC 2026 gubernatorial nomination form alongside a campaign poster displaying the Yoruba slogan, “Ó TI YÁ,” which translates to “it is time for change.”

Reflecting on the nomination, Doherty wrote, “With profound humility, gratitude, and a clear sense of purpose, I accept our party’s nomination to serve as its candidate for Governor of Lagos State in 2027.”

He further noted, “I am deeply grateful for the confidence our great party has placed in me and for our shared belief that Lagos deserves much better—inclusive leadership that works for everyone. The real work begins now. Together, we will build the Lagos that we know is possible. My friends, it’s time – O TI Ya!”

Doherty’s move follows a period of transition within the opposition ranks. Last month, he departed from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the NDC, following a previous exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the politician, the ADC currently faces internal developments that have divided the opposition coalition, leading various leaders to choose between remaining with the ADC or migrating to the NDC.

Regarding his decision to join the NDC, Doherty explained that the move followed extensive consultation, careful deliberation, and prayerful reflection.

He described the NDC as the appropriate vehicle to enable the opposition to deliver the benefits of good governance to every citizen without exception.

Addressing the challenges of the upcoming electoral process, Doherty remarked, “The battle ahead remains formidable, but I invite you to join us on this exciting, though sometimes turbulent, journey to a brighter future that has been long-promised and that has so far proven elusive, but that is, by the grace of God, now imminent.”
