Footage has emerged capturing the dramatic moment Department of State Services (DSS) operatives whisked Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), away from the Federal High Court premises in Abuja to the Kuje Correctional Centre following his court hearing.
In the video, supporters of the activist can be seen confronting the security agents as he was being moved into the vehicle meant to take him back to the Kuje Correctional Centre.
This scene unfolded on Wednesday after the Federal High Court in Abuja set June 30 for a ruling on a motion filed by Sowore to vacate the order revoking his bail.
During the proceedings, Sowore’s defence counsel, Raphael Adakole, moved a motion on notice filed on June 19, seeking to challenge the June 16 order that revoked the defendant’s bail and issued a bench warrant for his arrest due to his absence in court.
Adakole argued that “The application was accompanied by a 25-paragraph affidavit deposed to by Emmanuel Larry,” and requested that the court restore the status quo.
The DSS, represented by Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), strongly opposed the motion.
The prosecution submitted a 25-paragraph counter-affidavit, asserting that the defence failed to provide truthful facts and urging the court to reject the application.
Justice Mohammed Umar denied an oral request by the defence to release Sowore into his counsel’s custody, opting instead to maintain the current adjournment.
Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters, is being prosecuted by the DSS for allegedly labeling President Bola Tinubu “a criminal” in social media posts.
