A viral video showing thick flames floating along the surface of a river in Ondo State has ignited widespread shock and concern across social media platforms.
The incident, recorded in the coastal Ilaje Local Government Area—a well-known oil-producing hub—captures astonished residents looking on as the blaze drifts steadily along the water with the river’s current.
The floating fire was caused by ignited crude oil or refined petroleum products resting on top of the water surface.
Due to the area’s network of oil pipelines and prevalent illegal refining activities, flammable slicks often accumulate on waterways, resulting in severe hydrocarbon blazes marked by thick black smoke.
The dramatic footage has since drawn a wave of mixed reactions online.
