Minister of Works David Umahi has dismissed demands for his removal from office following the tragic death of Mary Habila, a staff member attached to the Federal Ministry of Works who passed away at his private residence in June.
Addressing critics in a video that trended on X, Umahi stated that various individuals attempted to exploit the tragedy for political leverage
. Emphasizing his stance against the social media backlash, the minister remarked:“Power and might don’t belong to social media, it belongs to God.”
Umahi revealed that rather than yielding to the pressure for his dismissal, President Bola Tinubu instructed him to maintain his focus on national infrastructure development.
Sharing the president’s response, Umahi noted: “When people took the death of one of my staff and started playing politics with it, they said the president should sack me, but the president surprised all of them and said, ‘Dave, go and build more roads.’”
While the minister did not elaborate on the ongoing investigations into Habila’s passing, the incident continues to draw widespread public interest online, with citizens calling for transparency and accountability while awaiting the official findings from authorities.
