The Bauchi State Government has officially announced Monday, August 17, 2026, as a work-free day statewide to permit civil servants and other public workers to take part in the upcoming Local Government Council elections.
This directive applies to workers across local, state, and federal establishments operating within the state, as well as staff members in the banking sector.
The announcement was detailed in a statement released on Friday by Mukhtar Gidado, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity.
According to Gidado, the decision came after the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission scheduled the local government elections for Monday.
He explained that the step is designed to allow eligible residents to cast their votes and participate fully in grassroots democracy without any interference from their daily work commitments.
“The declaration is intended to provide eligible citizens the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote and contribute to the democratic process at the grassroots level without disruption arising from official duties,” he stated.
He noted, however, that employees providing essential services are exempted from the work-free directive.
The governor’s aide appealed to all residents to step out peacefully and exercise their civic responsibilities within the bounds of the law.
He further advised voters to maintain orderly conduct before, throughout, and after the voting process.
“The State Government assures citizens that all relevant authorities will work to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral environment and urges everyone to cooperate with security agencies and electoral officials in the discharge of their responsibilities,” Gidado added.
The state administration concluded by wishing all residents a peaceful and successful local government election process.
