The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has issued an urgent advisory alerting the public to an elevated danger of riverine flooding spanning Kaduna, Niger, Delta, and 29 additional states over the upcoming week.

The flood risk projection spans from August 19 through August 25, 2026, prompting urgent calls for residents residing in low-lying floodplains to evacuate toward elevated terrain immediately.

Arc Umar Mohammed, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiHSA, released the warning on Wednesday, emphasizing that surging river levels will spark widespread inundation across multiple regions.

In his official statement, Mohammed noted, “The validity of the flood is from August 19-25, 2026. High riverine flood risk forecast for the next seven days across Kaduna, Niger and 31 other states. Rising river stages are expected to cause flooding. Communities on the floodplain should prepare to move to higher ground.”

The comprehensive advisory highlights a broad lineup of vulnerable regions, naming Taraba, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, and Plateau alongside Kaduna and Niger.

Furthermore, NiHSA’s assessment specifies impacted local infrastructure, mapping thousands of residential communities, schools, medical facilities, marketplaces, and worship centers exposed to imminent environmental stress across various hotspots.

In response to the looming threat, NiHSA has called on state and municipal governments to activate rapid response mechanisms, clear blocked waterways, deploy early-warning volunteers, and pre-position emergency relief assets.

Citizens have been strongly warned against attempting to navigate or cross flooded roadways and fast-flowing currents, either on foot or by vehicle, while being urged to stay tuned to continuous updates and agency bulletins.
