President Bola Tinubu has named Abel Enitan as the fresh Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, with his tenure commencing on August 27, 2026.
Enitan steps into the role to take over from Didi Esther Walson-Jack, who steps down from the Federal Civil Service upon reaching the mandatory retirement milestone of 60 years.
Hailing from Osun State, Enitan currently functions as the Permanent Secretary within the Federal Ministry of Education and stands as the most senior Permanent Secretary across the Federal Civil Service.
His administrative track record includes a tenure as Permanent Secretary spanning seven years and seven months, alongside deployments to the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the Vice President.
Disclosing the appointment via an official statement released on Wednesday, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that Enitan possesses profound institutional background and a comprehensive grasp of federal administrative structures.
“Mr Enitan, from Osun State, is the most senior Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service.
“He brings considerable institutional experience and a deep understanding of how the Federal Civil Service works to his new responsibility,” the release noted.
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to Walson-Jack for her contributions to the nation, acknowledging the various structural advancements and operational improvements implemented throughout her administration.
The president extended wishes for “a fulfilling and successful life after service” while relaying national appreciation for her extensive and valuable public career.
Tinubu directed the incoming Head of the Civil Service to advance ongoing institutional updates, foster deeper professional standards and productivity, and construct an agile civil apparatus capable of realizing his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Furthermore, the president encouraged Enitan to steer a civil administration characterized as “professional, merit-driven, accountable, innovative, and responsive to Nigerians’ needs and aspirations.”
Born on December 12, 1966, Enitan completed his secondary education at Ajibode Grammar School, Ibadan, as well as the College of Arts and Science, Ile-Ife.
He pursued higher education at the University of Lagos, securing a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Banking in 1988.
Subsequently, in 2015, he earned a Master of Science degree focused on Public Policy Analysis from Nasarawa State University, Lafia.
Enitan is scheduled to formally step into his new office on August 27, 2026, subsequent to Walson-Jack’s retirement.
