The Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended an individual identified as Moferewa Maiye after uncovering that he was falsely presenting himself as an officer of the Service.
Maiye, who stated that he originates from Agbajojun Village within the Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, was tracked down and detained by DSS operatives at his hideout situated near NITEL Junction along Adetokunbo Ademola Way in Wuse II, Abuja.
At the moment of his apprehension, Maiye was dressed in a DSS tactical uniform and was carrying a replica pistol.
Information from a security insider indicated that the secret police acted upon reliable intelligence suggesting the suspect utilized the attire and the fake firearm to frighten commuters and vehicle owners while extorting funds from them.
During the course of questioning, the insider noted that the suspect asserted the DSS gear belonged to his brother, a former DSS personnel who passed away several years prior.
He named the late relative as Monday Maiye, maintaining that the tactical items found in his possession were legacy items from his brother.
The individual is presently undergoing further questioning as security personnel investigate how he managed to acquire the official uniform and associated equipment, according to the source.
“Investigators are also trying to establish how long the suspect has been involved in similar acts of impersonation and extortion.
“The arrest underscores growing concerns by the Service over the activities of individuals who impersonate security personnel to intimidate members of the public and commit criminality,” the source declared.
