Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has successfully reached Jos, the capital of Plateau State, shortly after navigating a tense situation in Benue State.
During his time in Benue, individuals suspected of being political thugs obstructed a primary access route to stop Obi from reaching the state capital, Makurdi.
Obi explained that his convoy was halted by a group of youths at Gyado Villa along Gboko Road while he was en route to Yelewata to pay his respects to the families affected by the June 2025 massacre.
Addressing the blockade, Obi stated, “I’m using this occasion to appeal to the IG of police, the Director of DSS, and other agencies to please intervene and call various state governors to order, I was a governor myself.
“This rascality cannot be allowed, we have a country, we too have followers and people who can confront these people on our own if the state and the government can no longer provide us security.”
He further emphasized the need for issue-based campaigning, adding, “We cannot go on this way, it’s not acceptable.
“This was why when I participated in the presidential campaign office launch of APM yesterday, I said we need unity, love, justice, and let this campaign be concentrated on ideas and issues that concerns Nigerians today like insecurity, hunger, insecurity, killings, and how we are going to pull our people out of poverty, that’s what it should be.”
The hostile encounter has triggered widespread public commentary, with prominent human rights activist Omoyele Sowore warning that the perpetrators were playing with fire.
In a similar vein, Obi’s 2027 running mate, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, reached out to the international community to demand stronger security guarantees and protection for political opposition figures in the country.
