Aisha Yesufu Reacts To Blockade Of Peter Obi In Benue

Human rights activist and member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Aisha Yesufu, has strongly condemned the blockade that prevented Peter Obi from entering the Yelwata Internally Displaced Persons camp in Benue State.

Expressing strong disapproval of the incident, Yesufu emphasized that no individual, political faction, or group possesses the authority to restrict the movement of political candidates or determine where they can campaign within the country.

The development caused heightened tension in Benue State on Tuesday after suspected political thugs reportedly mounted a road barricade along a major highway as Obi arrived in the state for a scheduled visit.

Reacting after the confrontation, Obi decried the growing intolerance in Nigerian politics, clarifying that his planned visit to the displaced victims was motivated by humanitarian concerns rather than political campaigning.

Strongly criticizing the disruption, Yesufu asked, “How dare anybody stop anyone from moving to any part of the country to campaign?”

She further pointed out that political activities were legally permissible under official electoral guidelines, stating, “The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared that campaign has started. How can someone stop another from doing whatever it is that they need to do?”
