The 2027 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly condemned the blockade targeting the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi in Benue State.
Releasing a statement via his official X handle on Tuesday, Sowore alleged that the political confrontation obstructing Obi’s entry into Makurdi bore clear signs of being a sponsored attack.
Expressing dismay over the disruption, Sowore stated, “I have watched videos showing what appears to be a sponsored blockade and attack on NDC presidential candidate @PeterObi as he attempted to enter the state capital to carry out legitimate campaign activities.”
Denouncing the disruption of free movement, he added, “I strongly condemn these acts of political brigandage. This is totally unacceptable.”
He warned against suppressing opposition figures, maintaining, “No candidate should be prevented through violence, intimidation or sponsored thuggery from campaigning freely anywhere in Nigeria.”
Urging perpetrators to halt anti-democratic actions, he noted, “Those behind these cowardly attacks are toying with fire and threatening the democratic rights of all Nigerians. They must desist immediately before it is too late.”
The condemnation followed widespread reports that demonstrators mounted road barricades near the Nigerian Air Force Base along Gboko Road in Makurdi, chanting anti-Obi slogans.
The organized highway obstruction halted traffic around Makurdi Airport, temporarily preventing Obi’s entourage from proceeding to their scheduled destination within the state capital.
