Operatives within the Benue State Police Command have apprehended several individuals following the disruption targeting the political delegation led by Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential hopeful Peter Obi earlier in the week.
During a press briefing conducted in Makurdi on Wednesday, State Police Commissioner Cletus Nwadiogbu confirmed the development, noting that intelligent-led operations are actively tracking down remaining culprits.
Reflecting on the tense encounter, the commissioner explained that accompanying security personnel deliberately chose a tactical approach to ward off potential bloodshed and property damage.
Detailing the event, the police boss stated, “Unfortunately, Mr. Obi’s movement was obstructed by a group of persons, creating tension and a situation that could have degenerated into violence.”
He further noted, “At that point, the Police took a professional and tactical decision to avoid an escalation that could have resulted in loss of lives and destruction of property. Mr. Obi was subsequently safely escorted back to the airport and departed the state peacefully.”
Highlighting ongoing operations, Nwadiogbu added, “The Command has commenced intelligence-led operations to identify those responsible. Key arrests have been made, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend all other persons connected with the incident.”
Reiterating the command’s commitment to impartiality, the head of police stressed that fundamental civic freedoms apply to everyone regardless of background or political leanings.
Emphasizing this stance, he remarked, “No individual or group has the right to unlawfully obstruct another person’s movement.”
Law enforcement authorities have vowed that accountability will take its course for anyone implicated, while simultaneously urging residents to stay calm as inquiries continue.
